No doubt as a courtesy and a souvenir, The Sunday Times will send me a printed copy of today's edition, by airmail to America. In the past the envelope would have been offloaded at JFK in Queens, New York, and driven in a panel van through bustling traffic to my nearest post office in Manhattan, four blocks from my home, where my mail carrier would have loaded it into a three-wheeled pushcart and set out on her pedestrian rounds. Easy, direct and uncomplicated.
It's all different now. Now the envelope will fly all the way to Denver, Colorado, where it will be loaded into a giant 18-wheel semi-truck, which many hours later will arrive in Laramie, Wyoming, at the loading dock behind the post office
