Orange County Commissioners conduct special meeting to close

PAOLI — A special meeting of the Orange County Board of Commissioners was held

PAOLI — A special meeting of the Orange County Board of Commissioners was held May 30 to finalize a few business items for the county.

The commissioners voted 3-0 to approve a bid award to Calcar Paving as the lone bidder for the county's Community Crossings road resurfacing projects. The total bid of $1,230,518.70 was approved.

Attorney JC Tucker also presented a change for utility easement previously approved to a 30-year utility permit for those located near US Forest land. The board voted 3-0 to approve the change. Also approved as Ordinance 2023-03, which credits the overpayment of property taxes for less than $25.

Auditor Lonnie Stroud presented quotes for the replacement of the circuit courthouse boiler, with the commissioners selecting an option from Mehringer for two 400,000 btu units for $31,572.

Lastly, the commissioners voted 3-0 to accept an 8% health insurance cost increase from SIHO through JA Benefits, with the 8% employee contribution increase taking effect Jan. 1, 2024.

During a meeting of the Orange County Solid Waste Management District also held on May 30, the board voted 5-0 to renew a service agreement with Rumpke Waste Management for five years, including a 5% escalator clause and fuel surcharge, which would increase the cost by $100 for each 10¢ increase above $2.41 per gallon.

District supervisor Carl Anderson also reported a recent visit from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, which found minor issues at the Paoli transfer site. The issues were noted with a need for re-education for attendants and additional signage.
